TEOTWAWKI.  What exactly does it mean?

We know it’s an acronym for The End Of The World As We Know It.  But does it mean our personal world or the whole wide world?

You know like the world is going to experience a major climate change that would affect the way we live, thus changing the world as we knew it?   Or perhaps be damaged by a natural disaster, again, altering our world?  Or, even a pandemic?  Remember all the precautions that were being made as a result of the H1N1 flu pandemic?  This was world changing wasn’t it? People were now more aware of being around others and took steps to make sure they didn’t contract the bug? Right?

Well how about this then?  You’ve heard people say “if that happened to me it would be the end of the world”.  Well we know that a single incident is not really going to change the’ world’ – just theirs.  Which is my point.

Look at all the disasters we’ve seen lately.  Natural and man-made.  Now look at the people who survived these disasters.  This is the end of their world as they knew it right?

I think we get caught up in the doom and gloom of what ‘may’ happen that we lose sight of what is happening, and happening every day to hundreds maybe even thousands of people;  and has been for eons.

Any event that happens good or bad is TEOTWAWKI.  The old life is gone, whether it be our home was destroyed, we get married, we lose a loved one, we start a new job or our town is wiped out.  And once this happens, our world as we knew it has ended.  In exchange we start a new by relocating to another home, we learn to share our life with another, and we learn new responsibilities or learn to live without the loved one we lost.

So maybe what we should focus on is not the end of the world as we know it (because who knows what that’s gonna be) but how to deal with this world ending as we know it.

How does one prepare for the end of the world as we know it?  Well, with all the climate, economic and prophesy rhetoric it is good to have your affairs in order – i.e., plan accordingly with emergency supplies, food, water, self-protection, a plan B and anything else you feel you may need to survive whatever comes our way.

That’s the physical preparation.

But how about the mental part?  Ask anyone who has prepared for something like say, a major sport event and more likely than not, they will tell you the real thing is nothing like the practice prep.  Same holds true for any end of the world as we know it scenarios.  We won’t know what it’s really like to survive a total grid down situation even though we’ve practiced living without power, until it actually happens.  We won’t know how difficult it will be to fend off intruders attempting to steal our goods even though we’re gone to the shooting range hundreds of times.    And, we don’t really know how we will react to the change; again whatever that is, once the end of the world as we know it has happened.

So just maybe, just maybe the end of the world as we know it is not so much about what will happen as much as it will be how we deal with it after it happens – which could like I said, any day.

Just sayin.
