I’m not a huge novel reading person, mainly because I have more pressing matters to tend to like, say writing articles for my blog www.survivorjane.com, keeping preparedness alive and well on Twitter and Facebook, and tending to things around the homestead; to name a few.  Novels to me just scream relaxation - curl up in bed, grab some popcorn, shut off the real world and enter someone else world – if only for a few hours.

When I was given the opportunity to read the third sequel to the ‘Patriots’ series ‘Expatriates: A Novel of the Coming Global Collapse’ by James Wesley, Rawles – I made the time to read it.  I, like many others, have a copy “Patriots: Surviving the Coming Collapse” (mine with the original cover of the burning cash on the front cover), and like most preppers, if not all, this book has been placed alongside other preparedness books in my resource library.

james wesley rawlesFor those who are familiar with Mr. Rawles, he is a former U.S. Army Intelligence officer best known for his survivalist books, Patriots: Surviving the Coming Collapse; How to Survivor the End of The World as We Know it; Patriots: A Novel of the Coming Collapse, Survivors: A Novel of the Coming Collapse; and Founders and, is the editor of SurvivalBlog.com, a blog on survival and preparedness topics.

I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised to find ‘Expatriates’ in keeping with the other books in the series. All of them are virtual manuals of how to survive any “end of the world as we know it” … yes as cliché-ish as it sounds.

Expatriates doesn’t disappoint in the technical nor page-turning sense.  The novel is set in the same time frame as the other books, focusing on two expatriate families who struggle for survival amidst a global economic collapse; with settings in Florida, the Philippines, and northern Australia.expatriates

Reading from Mr. Rawles’ own description of ‘Expatriates’ - “When the United States suffers a major socioeconomic collapse, a power vacuum sweeps the globe. A newly radicalized Islamic government rises to power in Indonesia, invades the Philippines, East Timor, Papua New Guinea, and finally northern Australia. No longer protected by American military interests, Australia must repel an invasion alone.” - you might think at first glance, “Uh, another military book filled with jargoned only an enlisted person could understand.”  But you’d be wrong.  The story is suspenseful and action-packed. And, like I said earlier, a treasure trove of survival preparedness “must have references” all laid out for you; including actual survivalist skills and techniques. There is even mention of my survival medical buddies - Nurse Amy and Dr. Bones (www.doomandbloom.net) in the book.

Here’s the disclaimer in ‘Expatriates’:

The making and/or possession of some of the devices and mixtures described in this novel are possibly illegal in some jurisdictions. Even the mere possession of the uncombined components might be construed as criminal intent. Consult your state and local laws! If you make any of these devices and/or formulations, you accept sole responsibility for their possession and use. You are also responsible for your own stupidity and/or carelessness. This information is intended for educational purposes only, to add realism to a work of fiction. The purpose of this novel is to entertain and to educate

This should tell you something! Right??

I will sheepishly admit, ‘Expatriates’ was probably a little more interesting for me than to some, in part, because some of the storyline takes place in none other than Central Florida (for those who don’t know … I moved from Florida to my retreat in WNC). So as I read I knew exactly where these locations were and the detail in the book was remarkable.

survivalbloglogoI would highly suggest getting a copy of Patriots, Survivors, and Founders, along with this new book Expatriates; if you haven’t done so already. In them, you will find information on some of the most concise technical preparedness manuals on skills and preparedness – that could see you through possibly any “end of the world as we know it” scenarios.
